01 / UNDERSTAND THE ROLE

What does a Cloud Architect do?

Cloud architects translate business requirements into cloud designs that teams can build and operate. They choose service boundaries, identity models, network patterns and resilience approaches, while balancing cost, security and migration constraints.

The role matters because early architectural decisions shape long-term operational risk and flexibility. Cloud architect readiness is demonstrated by explaining alternatives and validating assumptions—not by drawing a diagram with the greatest number of services.

Career progression

  1. Cloud or Infrastructure Engineer
  2. Senior Cloud Engineer
  3. Cloud Architect
  4. Principal Cloud Architect
  5. Architecture Lead

Illustrative career paths, not required steps. Titles and scope differ between organisations.

02 / SKILL MAPPING

Cloud Architect skills required

Map what you know, what you have applied and what you can demonstrate. Tools vary; sound judgement transfers.

Technical Skills

  • Identity, network segmentation and secure landing-zone design
  • Resilience patterns, recovery objectives and distributed-system trade-offs
  • Migration planning, data architecture and cost modelling

Soft Skills

  • Discover non-functional requirements with business stakeholders
  • Explain architectural risk and cost in accessible language
  • Document assumptions and challenge requirements constructively

Leadership Skills

  • Facilitate design reviews and make ownership explicit
  • Create practical guardrails that delivery teams can adopt
  • Sequence migrations and govern exceptions proportionately

Tools & Platforms

  • AWS, Azure or Google Cloud architecture services
  • Infrastructure as code and policy-as-code tooling
  • Architecture diagrams, cost calculators and observability platforms

03 / SKILL GAP ANALYSIS

Common Cloud Architect skill gaps

Use these patterns to challenge your own evidence. They are development prompts, not findings about you or every person at a given level.

01

Junior

Knowing individual cloud services without a grounding in networks, identity or workload requirements.

02

Mid-Level

Building working environments without recovery testing, cost analysis or migration planning.

03

Senior

Designing a target architecture without accounting for legacy dependencies, team capability and operations.

04

Lead

Setting standards without mechanisms for adoption, exception handling or measurable risk reduction.

04 / CAREER READINESS FRAMEWORK

Know what the next level asks of you.

Readiness grows through scope, independence and evidence—not years alone. This qualitative framework is guidance, not a validated scoring instrument.

  1. 01

    Beginner

Explain a simple workload’s compute, storage, identity and networking choices with guidance.

  2. 02

    Intermediate

Design and deploy a bounded workload with security controls, cost assumptions and recovery procedures.

  3. 03

    Advanced

Lead a complex migration or architecture review, validate trade-offs and plan operational ownership.

  4. 04

    Lead

Set cross-team architecture principles and balance investment, governance and delivery across a portfolio.

  1. Upload CV

Add a PDF CV to the existing Career Intelligence Dashboard. Describe your contribution, technologies and outcomes clearly.

  2. 02

    Analyze Experience

AI extracts the skills and experience described in your CV. Review the results: extraction can miss context or misinterpret a claim.

  3. 03

    Identify Gaps

Compare the extracted skills with available dashboard benchmarks, then use this role’s framework to prioritise further development.

  4. 04

    Measure Readiness

Interpret the CV-based match as a starting signal, not a validated measure of competence. Use practical evidence to assess what you can actually do.

  5. 05

    Build Skills Profile

Use your findings to plan stronger evidence and a focused learning roadmap. Verified assessments, a verified Skills Profile and recruiter discovery are planned.

ROLE QUESTIONS, CLEAR ANSWERS

Cloud Architect career FAQs

What does a cloud architect assessment need beyond certifications?

It needs evidence of requirements discovery, trade-off analysis and operational outcomes. Certifications can support knowledge, but they do not demonstrate that you can migrate a workload or test its recovery under real constraints.

Must a cloud architect know every cloud provider?

No. Deep experience on one platform can be more useful than shallow familiarity with several. Understand transferable principles and add another provider when the target role requires it.

How can I show cloud architect readiness as an engineer?

Take ownership of a bounded design decision. Record requirements, options, costs and risks, implement the design and show how testing changed your initial assumptions.

What will JobUp show after I upload my CV from this Cloud Architect page?

The dashboard currently compares CV evidence with Cloud Architect, Database Specialist and Engineering Lead benchmarks. These role hubs provide guidance, not ten separate live assessments. A CV-based skill match is not proof of ability or a verified readiness score. You can review extracted skills and use the available analysis and roadmap tools to plan development. Verified assessments, Skills Profiles and the recruiter marketplace are planned, not currently delivered by this upload.
